Cross Country On A Train – The Chicago Layover

by Rebecca on September 4, 2013

You’d think a 5 hour layover, in the middle of a cross country train trip would be dreadful.  But it was actually one of the highlights of our trip!  We departed Washington DC at 4 pm on a Saturday and arrived in Chicago Sunday morning at 8:45 am.  My darling husband had suggested that I contact our friends Tracey and George to see if they were available to hang out with us.. AND THEY WERE!!!  The sites we went to were within walking distance, so if you’re doing a trip like this, and have a long layover in Chicago, take notes!

**Warning – Lots Of Pix Of Cute Boys Doing Fun Things

Walking through the streets of Chicago was fun for the boys.  We don’t have anything like this in our town!IMG 1583 768x1024 Cross Country On A Train The Chicago Layover

Chicago Has Giant Heads Lining The Sidewalks.. Pretty Neat!

After the heads we went to Crown Fountain in Millennium Park

I wish I’d thought to get a photo with both of the towers to show you how incredible this is, but my focus was on watching the kids and seeing them react to this awesomeness.  There’s two brick towers on opposite ends of a reflecting pool and water pours down them like rain.  The water collects between them so that kids and adults can walk (or run and splash) in the water.  What a great way to cool off on a hot summer day!

The fountain is composed of a black granite reflecting pool placed between a pair of transparent glass brick towers.  The towers are 50 feet tall, and they use light-emitting diodes(LEDs) to display digital videos on their inward faces.  Occasionally, the mouth on that giant face above would spout water, soaking the people close to it.

The tower above is the one at the opposite end of the one with the face.

My little guy being a butterfly with Tracey.  Poor Tracey couldn’t take a break, every time they’d reach the edge he’d bark “get back inna water” and back in they’d go.

The 5 yr old did his best to keep his clothes dry…

… but that didn’t last long!

The 2 yr old really wanted to get in the water, but he couldn’t quite muster enough courage and this is as close to the tower as he’d go.

Isn’t this cool?

Next Stop: DINOSAUR EGGS!
I don’t know what they’re really called but they are right next to the fountain, just head up the steps and you’ll see them.

And then…
THE BEAN!  Or, if you prefer it’s real name, Cloud Gate

I did not take this photo, I stole it from Wikipedia.

There’s my little guy, in the grey t-shirt, with Tracey.

Close up it looks like it’s made of concrete tiles, but it’s Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams.

Once you’re in / under The Bean, it’s reflective all around.  It looks different from every angle.  I couldn’t help but keep snapping pix!

I love this, looks like an alien or a spaceship.

And back outside.  Look closely, we’re the group of 3 adults and 2 little kids, under the sun and to the left a bit.

And then we wandered around the gardens and explored the other water features before heading back to the train station.

It was so great to be about to see our friends.  Thank you Tracey and George for showing us your awesome city!

Back on the train the little one passed out watching a DVD.  I’m sure I nodded off for a few minutes as well.
