Just when you thought you knew where to check for parabens, you learn about another place they could be hiding…
IN YOUR FOOD!
Are Parabens Hiding In Your Food?
Parabens have been linked to endocrine disruption and suspected to cause decreased sperms counts in men, and breast cancer in women. For a pregnant woman, there is concern that parabens and other hormone disrupting chemicals can effect fetal development. Parabens are synthetic estrogens, and behave like estrogen in the body. Our bodies are generally pretty good at flushing excess estrogen, but not if there’s a build up. When we are bombarded by parabens in cosmetics and food it’s difficult for our digestive system to keep up, and that’s where we end up having problems.
In a 2002 study, it was shown that parabens accelerated the growth of estrogen sensitive breast cancer cells. I am hyper aware of parabens now, because the breast cancer I had tested positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors, meaning that a buildup of those hormones would feed my cancer! EEEK!!
Another study, done in 2004, showed that 95% (19 out of 20) of the breast cancer tumors studied, contained parabens. According to The Breast Cancer Fund “Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors”. Parabens are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and skin care, and Propyl Paraben is used as a preservative in baked goods. The Environmental Working Group has found this paraben in 49 processed foods. Please check the list below so you know NOT to buy these items. Check with your child’s school too, to make sure these items are not on campus in vending machines or in the cafeteria.
